Statistical Data
The USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) work unit maintains the best source of standing timber inventory in North Carolina. The FIA sampling process involves visiting 5,800 plots across the state over a 7-year period. The most recent Forests of North Carolina, 2015 report provides a great overview of standing timber inventory and removal data at the statewide level.
Another component of the FIA program is the Timber Output Survey (TPO). This process involves surveying the primary roundwood consumers in the state to determine the overall levels of industrial output. This survey is completed every 2 years (odd years). The most recent TPO report, North Carolina’s Timber Industry – Timber Product Output and Use, 2015 is a condensed statewide snapshot of industrial output for forest products. This survey is often referred to as a “mill drain” survey.
